South-Indians , North-Indians and hypocrisies

Nobody needs to teach Indian hypocrisy and stereotyping; it’s a gift in their blood. We love to laugh at another person’s mole on his nose, while we are standing in a pit full of cow dung. South Indians disliking north Indians, North Indians don’t like south Indians and both together dislike north-east Indians. In fact North-east Indians itself is new usage, for the rest of India they are just “Chinkis”. It’s not racist, just sense of humor.

One more thing common among all of them is “my daddy … Strooongest!!!’. We have the best culture, language, community and nature; we are best analyzers, psychologists and of course rest of them live in a fish pond. Those people don’t like Mohanlal to be hero in this age are O.K with Rishi Kapur dancing with girl of his grand daughter’s age. We are O.K with Salman Khan’s pink trouser but Vijaykanth’s yellow shirt is so funny.

One of the most general and popular “happy to be ignorant” story is about a place called Madras in India. People live there are madarassis. For south Indians it is one metropolitan city which is now named as Chennai. But unfortunately for north Indians it is a wide unexplored area comes in south to Maharashtra and Orissa. (For north east Indians it does not matter. Geographically south India has four different states and six to seven different languages, for north Indians it is just madras. The rest of the India thinks whole madras speaks one language Tamil and they survive with Idly Sambar Vada. We made a big deal when Celebrity big brother’s sister did not learn Shilpa’s name isn’t it?

Knowing Hindi is one more misconception around. People worried why rest of the world not bothered learn Hindi. Well why should they? States are organized as linguistic regions. Every state has its own language; they are official and national language as Hindi. Why complain people over there don’t understand my language?

This kind of assumptions and misconceptions works other way round also. Kashmiri’s don’t love India, Bengali’s don’t take bath, Assamee’s are extremists etc. Generally this or any of such issues are fought in mails and posts. One starts and there will be avalanche of mails/comments, cause it’s easy to write offending mails/posts.

This post ( This is Indian Racism) I can mention here is a person who is pissed off with the terrorism panic in Bangalore. People of North Indian origin is asked to register details in nearby police station (to be sure he has no records) and this guy goes Fs ad Bs. There was an analysis and it was found any of south Indians did not participate in freedom fights.

Now my message to those living out in their ponds like the frogs who never knew what it is like being outside….

You guys ever knew how a war is fought (65, 71, Kargil )? None from South Indian community was ever engaged in Struggle for Freedom

The stupids of North India fight for India, die for India and u guys say they all are terrorists and you are different coz they are Northies. huh!!! Thanklessness Personified!!!! God forbid, if anything like Tsunami occurs again, from North Indian people’s side, nothing will change. These Pseudo Indians will ask for Rice from North Indians. And then we North Indians will donate it and don’t worry we will not poison it then.

Grow up you South Indians…I wish u cud…

Update: all Fs and Bs are deleted in his post.

Strange analyses and may be it explains lot of things. Biharis getting kicked in Assam can be argued right back since Battle of Plassy ( seventeen hundreds I guess ), don’t ask me connection . And of course why marathi’s hate kannadiga’s in belagam ( currently Belagavi I guess ) is because kannadiga’s did not fight for Shivaji against Aurangazeb five hundred years back. May be they did but that is not a point.

One mails also I want to mention here. Some techie living in Chennai, has lot of complaints. Some of them may be valid, the others I tried to answer here (and send him a link to this post )

Language – Tamil, Tamil and Tamil. Even if they know Hindi, they dont speak up.

Aren’t there any place where India where Hindi Hindi and only Hindi , or Bengali Bengali and only Bengali ? When you are not learning a local language when you are living in it , why are you expecting them to learn a language which is rarely used in their town. and about “even if they know Hindi they dont speak is highly exaggerated. There are some proud , conservative people but they are exceptional cases. Why would an auto driver or a cigarette shop owner ( Most of the time you interact with only these ) does not talk to you in Hindi ( even if he knows ) . There is life he has and he needs to earn to live.

Food – Idly, sambhar, rice, dosa, vada, pongal We have to cook our food ourselves (unbelievable naa). “Even dogs eat curd rice ,”

Once we saw a girl in the food court, she was looking and acting like a north Indian. My friend became exited and planned to talk to her, but just then we noticed her breakfast and then “dil ke armaan aansuon mein beh gaye”, she was having pongal. (disguise!!)

What about places where only roti, naan, alu parantha? Dude what will you do if you go to Italy ? eat pizza / pasta or complain that you don’t get Tanduri items

We asked an auto driver, “Hindi aati hai”?. He replied in Hindi “Hindi nahi aati”.

At least that. If a tamilian comes to Delhi or Mumbai and asks “Tamil terima ?/kannada barutta ” will he reply as ” teriyad/gottila ” . He will say ” go to hell / bhad me jao ” isn’t it ?

The most common suffix here is ‘a’, e.g. straight – straighta 2 cup tea – 2 cupa tea

Local language influence. Have you ever defined “Istyle ” and “Iskool “

When there is a ‘t’ in any name, they add ‘h’ to it. jayant – jayanth bharat – bharath . Here is a culture of adding mystical alphabets after ones’s name, like Mahesh R, Sandeep T etc.

Why do always people think their language is best and according to UNICODE standards ? Does people here write ” athal ” for ” atal bihari “. I have written about it here as What’s wrong with your name

Some more of them I don’t want to answer(and which also doesn’t need one ).

Here you cannot buy a needle after 6 PM (strange) No life after 9 PM.

Weather – summer from October to feb and rest of the year it’s deadly summer.
Cable connection is of no use here as only tamil channels are broadcasted on cable TV, if anyone wanna watch hindi channels then you need to buy a set up box (Rs.4000).

People – We never heard anyone laughing here (I wonder if they ever laugh or shout) So conservative, that noone talks even in the bus

  1. The people who post derogatory comments on websites against other ethnic groups have absolutely nothing better to do, like I dont have anything better to do now. But then again, I dont have a desire to insult another ethnicity. I assume these problems occur in India because where I live, I get along with all Indians from every part of the country, and maybe that is because of my personality. I love the food from all parts of India and that includes the music. To me, I take pride in calling myself an Indian and collectively, I take pride in all the cultures India has to offer and any insult to any culture of India, whether it is to a Tamilian or Punjabi is offensive. I would never side with an outsider and insult an another India who happens to be of another language groups.

I want to send a message out to all those Indians who love to constantly bicker about which type of Indian is better than the other; The British East India company was able to occupy the whole subcontinent because we were not United. Had we all banded together during the various rebellions that occured in the 19th century, we could have driven out the british and saved many Indians from the many public health disasters the british had perpetrated against the Indians. Even during the middle ages, had we, as Hindus, stuck together, we could have untied and prevent Islamic expansion in India.

    1. This is the best response i have read so far, well said, my sentiments exactly. I m a South African of Indian descent and was appalled by this North and South bickering. Indins came to South Africa in 1860 from the North and the South. They brought this North and South nonsense with them and then had to set aside their differences and join forces to fight against apartheid and Dutch rule. How can we fight as a race when we have such prejudiced behaviour amongst us as a race. Small minded people I say.

  2. When I used to write to Indian, Asian and middle eastern girls on dating sites, one common question they will usually ask me on dating sites was whether I was north or south Indian. When I responded “south”, they would stop responding. So now I have actively stopped taking an interest in Indian, Asian and middle eastern girls. They are a bit too superficial and seem very much influenced by Bollywood’s ideal of a man: tall, fair and party crazy.

  3. Dear friends,
An acquaintance showed me this blog post and I decided to share my views with all of you.. I am a Bengali as my name suggests. As all Bengalis we were totally into bhat machh culture in Calcutta.
After shifting our base to Hyderabad, I am proud to say we did not have any problem at all. I did not have any difficulty in getting adjusted to the “southern” culture in any way. I had also spent days in Lucknow at one point of time, and there too, we had no problems with the “northern”way of living. This “northern” and “southern” concept is a myth and I dislike people who sneers at any race, culture and tradition.C’mon, we are in the 21st century…we should not remain frogs in the well but shrug off our racism and move forward.
Let us refrain from despising and jeering at chinks, bongs, oriyas, madrasis, northies, gujjus, panjus, marwaris and mallus…and be civil for a change!!

  7. you should believe when i say that NORTH INDIANS SHOULD REALLY THINK ABOUT IT IN GREAT DETAIL IF THEY ARE PLANNING TO RELOCATE TO SOUTH INDIA. we’re basically from north india, but my dad’s in navy so we live in vizag(coastal city in andhra pradesh). i was even born here, but the fact that i grew up in a pretty big naval colony where everyone speak hindi(even south indians) ensured that i never learned telugu.

telugus resent north indians here because the whole neighborhood is filling with north indians. well, of course, if navy has transferred us there we can’t help it right?

when i went for college, obviously it was a local college and everyone was so unhelpful towards “snotty north indian”. we are considered to be clever and characterless girls because we are norht indian. so i learned telugu to interact better with my classmates. but still, i was an outsider. on the roads, every telugu guy(even school going guys) comment on me, sometimes getting up to my face to scare me and saying things about me in telugu because they think i can’t understand it. BS! i hate vizag and telugus with a passion. they say north indians don’t change when they move to south india, same is for south indians, and i can say that because i have spent my life in more than 4 cities all over india.

here, they’ll give preference to telugus like less auto fares for telugus, and they will charge such high fares from us as though we’re foreigners or tourists. even some of my college faculty resented me because of the fact. well, i’m done with vizag and moving out soon. thankyou god! 🙂

    1. it mostly depends on the place where you live…vizag does not have a history of multi cultaralism..if you come down to hyderabad or to any telangana district the situation changes completely so much so that you need not learn telugu..everyone here is acquainted with atleast basic hindi(ofcourse this is true to all small towns as well in telangana)..so,u need not develop any animosity against telugus by generalising them..however,i am a strong advocate of the theory that we must be a roman when we are in rome…everyone should learn the native language of an area if he were to live there for a considerable duration of time.

They are very disgusting when it comes to manner. Yes, south indian people, looks al right but i must say they are good at heart. Of all, i think North East people are cool cos they look cool and have a good heart!

    1. i think you are wrong…i dont live in India but visited 8 times. On the last occasion i decided to visit the South as my inlaws are of South Indian origin. The South Indians were so rude to us it was shocking. Tour guides knowinf we were foreigners could even fake their sincerity just for our benefit did not even do this. It was like we were intruding in their space and we were just counting the days before we left for the North. Even my mother in law who was singing praises of the South and waited to go their, hung her head in shame at the behaviour of the people. An outsiders experience guys, so its totally unbiased.

  9. Most of the northies I have met in the last 20 years in US behave posh and grandeur. Nothing wrong in it but they do not want to associate with any thing Indian. No Indian dresses for them or for kids, nothing Indian inside the homes, kids speak only english and only American friends. We are south indian neighbours and had to bear them. No Indian dishes were cooked at all. Not just this family but all people I have met behave like Unfortunate born in India. They try hard to assimilate into the American society because they think they are fair and better. Having American boyfriends is considered posh as well.

South Indians are conservative – only the rich south indian try to show off but every one else wants to attach themselves to their own tradition. Some are too conservative that I myself get bored. Most of them regularly cook South Indian food and eat outside food as well and the kitchen smells. We have dresses for every occasion for kids and for us. We have learned Hindi and watch Hindi movies and appreciate them. Most of them are religious and quite often go to temples or perform poojas at home. We go to N. India temples but I never saw any Northy in South Indian temples. We try to preserve our culture here by letting our kids learn south indian music/dance. I have never seen any northy doing such things – infact they laugh at who ever is learning. They used to hate poojas and would only arrive after the pooja is finished. I have never seen Northy doing poojas at home.

Except for the so called Hinduism.. nothing seems to be common amongst the North and South. We are force to be united
