Okay, this is a weird but unsurprising experience during this election season.
On my day casting my vote, I approached a GOP booth outside my polling station and asked them to cut me a slip. Without hesitation, the lady stationed there told me that I was at the wrong place and should’ve been somewhere else. On my query on where that would be, she had no clue and said it could be very far, and I should be finding it on my own !!
There are two issues: one. She’s a volunteer paid by biriyanis and bottles, and her job was to help me, although it’s not my entitlement. She could’ve been polite enough for me to provide direction. The moment she misled me, she was no longer a volunteer.
Two. We’ve been casting votes at the same polling station for a few years. Additionally, I know an Anganwadi worker in the locality who verified my booth just a few months ago. It was highly unlikely the election commission would change my constituency.
Later, the ruling party volunteers helped me and cut me a slip. I was apparently at the right place; hence, to my surprise why, GOP workers tried to mislead me.
I have one inference; if I am right, this is alarming. GOP workers profile the voters based on appearance. The ones who look educated and informed are to be misled or not to be helped. Also, my hand bracelet might have made them think I never voted for them. So why waste time cutting a slip?
Thoughts?
