So, when are we stopping funds for Homeopathy?

So, When are we tagging Homeopathy as useless and suspend funds allocated to it?

It’s a strange question in Indian context, considering more than 77% of Indians approve the effectiveness of this medicine! It may seem like an outrageous accusation for those who haven’t kept themselves updated with recent developments in medical circles. But it is still a valid question, for lawmakers, media and medical associations of India.

Let me give you some background on this. UK MPs have urged to withdraw funding on Homeopathy and bring down all the medicine it offers, off the shelves. They have taken this stand after continuous recommendations from doctors, medical research centers, pharmacies and all other stakeholders who have authority to talk about it. As I read, it is only the Royal Family who has backed Homeopaths. Anyways, if government manages to demote it, millions of NHS funds will be redirected to something very useful.

Homeopathy is not “herbal medicine”, nor Ayurvedic, as a lot of people in India seem to think. Herbal/Ayurvedic medicines contain original ingredients which has healing power, which may or may not work. But Homeopathy starts from here and dilutes them to an extent that it hardly contains any of its original ingredients. In other words, even for a single molecule of original ingredient you need to consume tonnes your prescription. I am no doctor, but I don’t need to be one to understand something is terribly wrong here. For e.g., if I have temperature, I need some stuff which can go in and calm it, say 500 mg of paracetamol. In homeopathy they would prescribe 0.0000000ng of similar content (along with water) ; how would it do the same good?

This is just one of the complaints. There are several others. There is also an allegation that Homeopathy is never tested properly, and homeopaths never had proper answers for this. If the companies don’t test the medicine they sell, then who else is going to do that? We the victims? All available test results point that Homeopathy is no better than Placebos. That means, it may not work better than sugar pills, and the cure is purely physiological effect, for having taken some medicine. That’s cheating isn’t it? Also it’s not morally and ethically right for doctors to prescribe it.

On Indian funds read this link which says “the National Capital Territory of Delhi alone spent Rs 77 crore—or 7 per cent of its Rs 1,100 crore health budget—on homeopathy without a question being asked.”. A whopping 7 Cr is not justified, which otherwise could be spent on something very useful.

I don’t have any authority to promote it or ban it. All I have is questions and concerns. We need to reconsider this; otherwise tomorrow we may need to fund a portion of our budget for witchcraft as well.

My list of ten best documentaries

I highly recommend this set of ten documentaries. I rate all of them above 9.5/10. I know there are many more which may be as good as these; I just did not have a chance to watch them. Please feel free to recommend them to me.

An Inconvenient Truth, by Al Gore. You already would have seen this. If not, shame on you 🙂

Capitalism – A Love Story, by Michael More. This gives a complete picture on “how capitalism works”. Basically this is about industries maximising profits with optimal resource utilisation with minimum ethics.

Earthlings: All the things you need to know about meat, fur, leather etc. It’s the story of human exploitation of his fellow earthlings for food, clothing’s, and entertainment. Recommended only for people with strong stomach.

Food Inc. by Robert Kenner. A fantastic movie on how food goods in supermarket shelves are generated in assembly line. Shocking information, a must see.

Food Inc.
Food Inc.

Home, by Yann Arthus-Bertrand. It’s a collection of areal videos, arranged in coherence to narrate a compelling story on our Home- earth. Superb presentation on how small we are, how big we have screwed it up. This movie is free on youtube.

Religulous – This is a fantastic movie from the director of Borat, Larry Charles and presented by Bill Maher, obviously you can expect this to be satirical and hilarious at the same time. The name says it all – religion is ridiculous, and this is the most interesting topic for me. In this movie, Bill roams around places (mostly USA) visiting religious people, debating them. Various encounters and the argument they put forward are simply ROFL.

Sicko, by Michael More. This movie addresses problems in American Medical care, being manipulated by insurance and pharmaceutical companies. In coming few years this documentary may not be as strong as it is now, democrats may end up changing the system for good. Anyways, both the countries I lived in had (kind of) socialised medicine, which also mean receipt for medicine does not hurt when you are sick, it happens only in America.

Story of the stuff, by Anne. This is story of all the stuff, starting from raw materials till it becomes rubbish i.e extraction, production, distribution, consumption, and disposal. It is criticised to be inaccurate, but hey, the story is still true and compelling.

The Age of Stupid, a British movie on climate change. This is set in future where whole earth is already disturbed by climate change and remaining humans do causal analysis using all stored footages.

Zeitgeist This has two parts, one addresses Christianity, the other on capitalist economics. Compelling arguments, must watch.

What do the numbers on bottom of bottles indicate?

I recently came across another chain mail, about the numbers below plastic bottles we use. According to this mail, the number (generally within a triangle) written at the bottom, which ranges from one to seven, indicates how many times that particular plastic is recycled in reverse order. I dug a little deeper. Apparently, the number printed has nothing to do with the number of times plastic has been recycled.  It’s just the type of plastic which is used for that particular bottle. 5 is polypropylene and 1 is polyethlyene terephthalate etc etc.

One primary use of having the numbers if to help recyclers to sort into appropriate groups. In other words, identification number.

1 – PET, polyethlyene terephthalate
2 – HDPE, high-density polyethylene
3 – PVC, polyvinyl chloride
4 – LDPE, low-density polyethylene
5 – PP, polypropylene
6 – PS/PS-E, polystyrene / expanded polystyrene
7 – OTHER, resins or multi-materials

Here is copy paste of that mail

How to avoid:
Check on the bottom of the bottle there is a triangle sign and there will be a number on it. If the number is higher than or equal to 5 –> then this bottle is safe to use.
Whatever number under 5, will release the chemical. For most bottle water, the number is 1.
Did you know chemical released by plastic water bottles can cause cancer
(It is not the water that affecting you but the chemical releasing from the bottle)
Pass this to all your friends and also make them aware of it…
